In this tutorial, we will create a sitemap. This will allow Google and other search engines easy access to index your website and pages within; on their page rankings. As well as reading, your meta tags all major search engines first port of call when visiting your website is to determine whether you have a sitemap. If so, the engine can easily index the pages within your site. This also tells the engine that this particular part of your website is optimised for easy navigation.
Basically a sitemap makes the search engines job a lot easier, for a website owner it is also a good way to identify any broken links within your website, rather than the monotonous take of checking all the links manually that could be time consuming.
Sitemaps will also house a last tag telling the search engine when the page was last modified, this is important as search engines favour pages that are being maintained and added to on a regular basis.
Check the performance of your sitemap by adding it to the Google Web Master Tools.
