Pre 2005 many search engines referenced a websites Meta data to determine the content of a particular page, this lead to many webmaters spamming their Meta data to rank high for particular keywords and search phrases. As the algorithms evolved they shifted away from the Meta information using more innovative and effective techniques to determine the content of a page.

Why Use Meta Tags: Although many search engines have adopted other methods to index your page many still reference your Meta Data to rank your website. Some advertising programs also reference this information to help them place relevant advertisements within your page.

As the web evolves some programmers may use the Meta information for new methods, so it’s important to include them.In truth your Meta tags are one of the first things referenced at your website, and although some of the big search engines may not reference your keywords and site description portion of your Meta, there is so many other Meta snippets that can be useful, see the list below.
